I have seen the Attach-a-deck devices as well as mention of the stacked washer idea you described. Does the IRC address porch covers differently from decks? Since there is no live load I would think there should be some differences. I've noticed that a lot of the discussion on ledger attachment is regarding decks rather than porch covers. I looked at your attached doc regarding decks. I should also mention that my stucco is the "real" cement type, not foam-backed. One guy was from a company that does a lot of porch covers and the other guy was a friend who used to build houses and now does mostly remodeling. They both said they had never done it and would not do it for the reasons you stated. ![]() I did get somewhat of a shocked look form the two local builders I asked about removing the stucco. Less degradation of the stucco would take place and your deck could breathe behind the ledger. Then your band board would be held proud of the stucco and your bolts would go through the washers into the band. Now, he may allow you to drill holes equal to the exterior size of 1/2" washers in the stucco, and stack the washers to the depth + of the stucco, siliconing the hole well before inserting the washers. Personally I would not want to violate the envelope of a stucco house, BUT the ledger must be attached firmly to the house band boards, requiring the removal of the stucco. ![]() Opening the stucco up will introduce unwanted moisture to the stucco material itself, even if flashed. ![]() If you remove the stucco, do you have space behind it for flashing (probably not). I would definitely run it past your county/municipal inspector for a few reasons. See page 10 of the PDF file below which says "House siding or the exterior finish system must be removed prior to installation of the ledger board. The decking code requires the siding or finish be removed.
